Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Wigeon

First seen on Monday 24th August 2020 at Druridge Pools

Wigeon can usually be seen at Druridge all year round, but their numbers swell in the winter, when there are usually over a hundred roosting on the North Pool and Feeding on the Budge Fields. The photograph below is a female, with all-over brown plumage.

They have a very distinctive whistling call. They are grass grazers, and move over the meadows in flocks, in unison, all with their heads in the grass. When spooked, they quickly fly into the safety of nearby water, then as they gain confidence again they slowly move back onto the grass, one or two at a time.

The male (shown below) is very different to the female (as is often the case with ducks). He has a clean grey colour, pink chest, and a brown head with a pale yellow stripe on his forehead. Both have grey bills with black outlining.
