Wasps - The Willow Mason Wasp

First seen on Thursday 12th August 2021 at Druridge Pools

The Willow Mason Wasp (Symmorphus bifasciatus) is not normally found this far north. It is a parasitic wasp, preying on beetle larvae which it takes to the nest and stores in larval chambers. The host for this species is the Blue Willow beetle. Mason wasps species are quite similar, but the patterns of yellow and black are quite distinctive.
