Divers - The Cormorant

First seen on Friday 10th January 2020 at Wallington

Cormorants would normally found at sea, or on rivers and larger lakes. I have seen them on the Middle Pond, the Garden Pond and the Chinese Pond. Usually they are just passing through, but in the winter of 2020/21 several were long-staying, doing plenty of fishing on the lakes. They have vivid green eyes and are normally all-over black, but these have large white areas showing that they are juveniles.

Cormorants are divers, and can spend quite a while underwater. When on the surface they swim quite low in the water. They roost in trees, and sometimes you can see large numbers in a single tree looking a bit like Christmas decorations. The other recognisable pose is when they dry their wings outspread, on the shoreline or on a post, showing their wonderful golden feathers.
