Gulls - The Herring Gull

First seen on Wednesday 18th December 2024 at Wallington

The Herring Gull, along with the Lesser Black-backed Gull and the Black-headed Gull are the three main gulls that most people will see in the UK, especially in inland. The Herring Gull is a similar size to the Lesser Black-backed Gull, the main differences being much paler wings and pink legs in the herring gull rather than yellow legs in the lesser black-backed gull. If you get close enough to see, Herring Gulls also have pale eyes. Juveniles are brown and speckled and much more difficult to identify! The call of the Herring Gull is the one you will most associate with the seaside.
