Moths - The Pied Smudge

First seen on Tuesday 3rd October 2023 at Wallington

This moth has quite an unpronounceable scientific name (Ypsolopha sequella) so thank goodness its common name is so good. Pied meaning black and white, smudge is a bit insulting, as the pattern is quite interesting - the large black patch on its shoulders resembling a rabbit's head! (it is sometimes called a bunny moth). It is quite tiny, with a wingspan under 2cm and found in Woodland areas (which is where I spotted this one). It normally flies at night, so I was very lucky to see it during the day.
