Dragonflies - The Southern Hawker

First seen on Tuesday 13th September 2022 at Wallington

The Southern Hawker, as the name suggests, is much more common in the south of the country, but it is spreading northwards. The male is bright blue and green on a dark background. The female is green and brown. They both have large patches of green on the side of the thorax. The males are very territorial, and are usually found flying up and down keeping others away. This dragonfly is similar to the Migrant Hawker, but has vivid blue and green markings rather than blue and brown. The Emperor also has similar colours, it has a green body and blue tail, whereas this Southern Hawker is a mixture of blue and green all over. Southern Hawkers are around from July to September, and are mainly seen in flight, although they do occasionally land on vegetation such as a small branch, and dangle down vertically.
