These birds are summer visitors. As their name suggests, they catch flies. They are not brightly coloured birds so at first glance not easy to identify, but they do have a characteristic streaking on their crown. However, their feeding habits are quite distinctive - they perch in a branch, fly out to catch an insect, then fly back to the same branch, repeating this many times - great fun to watch. There were several of these in the trees just outside (north of) the walled garden, overlooking the meadow. They were there the following year, plus another group on the river, near the stepping stones.
