Beetles - The Blackclock Beetle

First seen on Wednesday 25th August 2021 at Cragside

Once very common, I don't seem to see many of these any more. This one is the classic shiny black 'ground beetle', which scuttles along the ground at great speed (making a photo somewhat difficult!). There are hundreds of different species of ground beetle, all with long Latin names. This one is probably Pterostichus madidus - the Common Blackclock Beetle. It can have black legs or brown legs.
