The Brambling is a finch and is often found mixing with Chaffinches. You can occasionally think a brightly coloured chaffinch is a Brambling, but when you see them together they are actually very different. The Brambling has much brighter colouring (even more so in the summer). Like chaffinches, they tend to be ground feeders, feeding on fallen seeds under trees (beech masts in this case). They are not common, and it's always a treat to see one. The male (first image) has a much darker head, in fact it's black in the summer, with a black beak. The second image is probably a female or juvenile, with a paler brown head. They tend to be just winter visitors.
