These dragonflies are usually the first ones to emerge each year. They are around in May to July. The female has a bright yellow tail. At first glance, when in flight she looks like a hornet - the bright yellow is very striking. The males are powder blue and are similar to the Black-tailed Skimmer, but the chaser lacks the black tip to his tail and has yellow patches on the side. As the name suggests, it also has a broader abdomen (tail).
