Flies - The Caddis Fly

First seen on Friday 24th May 2024 at Cragside

The Caddis Fly is probably more famous in its larval stage, where it lives underwater and builds a case around itself for protection and camouflage. These cases are quite distinct for each species, some are made from sand grains, some from dead leaves, and some just random debris. Another way of distinguishing some species is the number of spurs on the legs.
