Larks, Pipits and Wagtails - The Grey Wagtail

First seen on Thursday 10th September 2020 at Cragside

The Grey Wagtail is usually found beside water. They tend to patrol the edge of the water looking for food. They don't stay still for too long, and frequently fly from one side of the lake to the other. Easy to spot when they are wagging their tails, but don't confuse the grey wagtail with the pied wagtail. Pied wagtails are black and white (and a few shades of grey) but the grey wagtail (confusingly) has a vivid yellow underside. There is also a yellow wagtail to add to the confusion. This one was found along the fast flowing Depdon Burn bubbling under the Iron Bridge. It was actually hunting for food very close to a Dipper at the time, but Wagtails don't dive underwater like Dippers.
