Kestrels will normally be hovering in search of food, often some distance away. If you are lucky, you may find one perched in a tree, or on a post feeding or preening, although there are so many trees at Cragside, its a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. There are a lot of other birds at Cragside, and Kestrels will often be mobbed or driven away by the smaller birds. Females are an all-over brown in colour. Males have a grey head, and more vivid chestnut coloured wings with a dark tip.
