Ants - The Leman's Ant

First seen on Tuesday 15th June 2021 at Cragside

This is a black bodied ant, probably a Leman's Ant, as the similar Large Black Ant is not so common in Northumberland. It has characteristic bands in its abdomen, with bristles on the tip. it should have tiny hairs on the top of its thorax, but you need a microscope to see those.


 


 

Amazingly, this one was spotted carrying off a dead fly - much larger than itself...
