Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Little Grebe

First seen on Tuesday 15th June 2021 at Cragside

The Little Grebe is a small diving duck which not only spends a lot of time in the reeds, but seems to spend a long time underwater and when it surfaces it's in a completely different place! It is less than a foot long. You can tell it's a little grebe by the chestnut neck and the characteristic bright patch on the base of its bill. The young ones are more drab, except when the are very young and then they are stripy. These were on Nelly's Moss Lake (both)
