Butterflies - The Peacock

First seen on Thursday 10th September 2020 at Cragside

The Peacock is the butterfly most people can recognise, due to its beautiful pattern of an eye on each wing. It is named after the peacock's tail, which has the same pattern of eyes. They are around all year, but hibernate in the winter, waking when the weather warms up - these will have signs of wear and tear in scratches and missing notches. The male and female are very similar. The underwing is very dark as it is camouflage for when they hibernate in the winter.
