Flies - The Cleg Fly

First seen on Tuesday 12th July 2022 at Wallington

The Cleg Fly, or to give it its full name - the Notch-horned Cleg, is a member of the Horsefly family. It's not a very pleasant insect as they can bite - definitely one to keep well away from. They are usually near livestock, but this one was in the wildflower meadow. On the plus side, they do have fascinating patterns on their wings, and colourful eyes - this one is a male, the females' eyes are bright green, and it is the females that bite.
