Finches and Buntings - The Siskin

First seen on Sunday 22nd December 2019 at Wallington

Siskins can occasionally found on some back-garden feeders, but are normally seen feeding in birch and especially alder trees. Siskins feed in a very distinctive way - they feed on the seeds from cone-like fruits and hang from the branches in an acrobatic way, often upside down, and quite close to each other. You can often see these birds at the top of the tallest trees behind the Clocktower Cafe, although they occasionally come down a bit lower elsewhere on the estate.

The Siskin above was was on the feeders in the Wildlife Hide, he is a brightly coloured male. The one below is a female, on the feeders by the car park entrance. These feeders attract woodland birds from the surrounding trees, including Marsh Tits and Bramblings.
