Butterflies - The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary

First seen on Monday 20th June 2022 at Cragside

I was fortunate to see two of these while on the Tumbleton Lake walk. They are quite rare, especially in the east of the country. They are very similar to the Pearl-bordered Fritillary the added 'Small' in its name is a bit pointless, as the size difference isn't great and you are very unlikely to see two side by side to compare. The real (albeit subtle) differences are in patterns. For example the edge markings which are darker and joined on this one, and the underside has thicker black lines than its larger relative.

In the photo above, you can see the seven "pearls" that border the underwing. The one below was seen in June the following year, and has much fresher colours. It is probably a female, as the dark spots on the wings are lager than the male in the first photo.
