Butterflies - The Small Copper

First seen on Monday 4th September 2023 at Cragside

Not as common as many butterflies, the Small Copper can be identified by its vivid orange colouration, and it is quite small, similar in size to the blue butterflies. They can be seen mid to late summer. Interestingly, the small copper has one drab underwing and one pretty one, as you can just see from the second photo. Male and female are very similar. The male is smaller and has more pointed wings. Small Coppers do also have colour variations, including little blue spots on the lower wings.
