Cormorants are divers, and can spend quite a while underwater hunting for fish. When on the surface they swim quite low in the water, as you can see in the first phot. The second image is one in a typical pose drying its wings on old branch (they often use a post). This one is a young one with a pale chest. This one was fishing (successfully) on Tumbleton Lake.
