Moths - The Oak Lantern Moth

First seen on Tuesday 10th August 2021 at Cragside

This moth has a scientific name of Carcina quercana but has several common names . As well as Oak Lantern, it is also known as a Long-horned Flat-body moth, or oak-skeletonizer (in USA) which is a bit of a scary name and tells you what its food plant is. They are normally much darker and have more vivid colours of yellow brown and orange - this one is a very faded example. They have very long antennae and are normally nocturnal, so not very easy to see.
