Mammals - The Roe Deer

First seen on Sunday 27th October 2019 at Cragside

You have to be lucky to see deer, as they are quite shy and will usually sense you before you see them, and move away. When I saw this deer it was actually not far from the car park, near the carriage drive. Roe deer are this beautiful rusty colour in the summer, and more dull-grey in the winter. Unlike some deer that live in herds, Roe Deer are more solitary, living in small groups, usually feeding on the edges of woods and on farmland. You can identify deer from the shape of the rump patch - the Roe Deer has a broad white rump patch.

From the Moorside car park you can sometimes see Roe Deer grazing in the bracken and heather. They will be well camouflaged though...
